Several weeks ago, I was obligated to sit in silence – not an easy task since I love to be “busy” or “productive” – depending on the day. But this time, I had no other choice. So I did; I sat in a room and sat still near an open window and just listened…to the silence. No music, radio, computer, tv, social media, nothing, just me and silence.
It was uncomfortable and felt like forever. Finally, I fell asleep and woke up only 30 minutes later. I thought to myself, how in God’s name will I do this for a day. It was indeed an act of self-discipline. I decided to close my eyes and listen to the silence. And yes, you guessed it, I heard the beautiful sounds of life, not my life, but life, nature, air, trees, birds, squirrels, wind…they all have life. They all make their own sweet sound, but “our life” drowns them out, so it takes intentional stillness to hear the beauty of life.
You may be thinking, listen, I live in a big city where stillness is impossible and there “ain’t” no squirrels that I can listen to other than rats… I GET IT…BEEN THERE! But I promise you, if you are still enough in your heart and mind and find a park, you will hear “Eden.” You will experience the stillness of nature and the beauty of life.
As spring approaches, take time to go for a walk.
Sit in a park.
Listen to the beauty of life.
Look out your window at night and up to the sky.
See the darkness and the beautiful twinkling stars. Do you know that happens every day? Every day God shows up with the gifts of the sun, clouds, rain, snow, blue skies, moons, stars in the night sky. A free gift.
All we have to do is be still enough to listen.
